An Overview of Anxiety and Depression

By Chrissy

The two most popular treatments for anxiety are medication and psychotherapy. You can benefit most from a combined approach though. It will take some experimentation to find out which treatments work best with you. If your anxiety is very severe, you might want to consider some of these other treatments as well.

Sometimes, just seeing a good doctor can solve your anxiety issues. Make sure you see your doctor when your anxiety becomes severe or out of control. Your doctor knows your personal medical history and will do tests to rule out any serious health problems. He might even suggest some alternative treatments that could work.

If you suffer from panic attacks, your doctor will most likely prescribe antidepressants. Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Klonopin are also prescribed by doctors. Antidepressants are effective for controlling symptoms and they reduce negative thoughts in the patient’s mind. Sometimes, people use these medications as a fallback plan when traditional methods aren’t working. However, if the symptoms persist and your doctor has prescribed some stronger medications, it might be time to discuss other options with him.

SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are becoming more widely used for treating anxiety. These drugs are used to block serotonin from being sent out of the brain. These drugs have many side effects including hot flashes, muscle twitching, headaches, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness and sexual problems in men. Some people, however, do feel positive about this type of treatment for anxiety.

The most recent development in the treatment for anxiety and depression is the use of a combination of different types of therapies. Cognitive behavioral therapy is now being used in conjunction with prescription medications to help change the way a person thinks and acts when confronted with negative thoughts. This type of treatment can be very effective in preventing relapse and recurrence of the anxiety disorder. It is a gradual process that uses positive reinforcement and various forms of therapy to get to the root of an issue that causes the person to experience anxiety.

Both anxiety and depression can be very disabling to daily activities and there is no reason why someone should suffer from either of these mental health conditions without treatment. A combination of treatment methods can provide a person with the relief he or she needs to live a normal and fulfilling life. Be sure to consult your doctor before starting any new medications or treatment plans. With proper care and attention, you can get the relief you need without the negative effects of using recreational drugs.
