Depression: Symptoms, Causes And Treatment Options

By Chrissy

Depression Can Kill … Don’t Allow it To

The most widely used method of dealing with depression is cognitive behavioural therapy, better known as CBT. The idea is that if we can change the way we think and respond to situations we will be better able to deal with our feelings. The theory states that if you think differently about a problem you will respond more positively. Therefore the first step in dealing with depression and anxiety is to identify the cause or causes of your depression and begin to change your thoughts and behaviour. If you are prescribed medication by your doctor, this should be followed up with therapies or at least weekly sessions in order to ensure your medications are being effective and that your depression is being managed effectively.

Once you start using CBT, you will find that it helps you address the issue that is making you depressed in the first place. For instance, if you are depressed because you feel unattractive or like you do not have any self-esteem, CBT will help you discover why this is the case. It will then be possible to work on how to gain some self-esteem and to work on combating the negative thoughts that are contributing to your depression. In addition, when you embark on CBT for depression you may discover that medication you are taking is not actually helping you to control your symptoms and so you will need to try out different methods of treating your depression and see which ones work best for you. However, even if you decide to try alternative therapy, it is always important to consult your doctor before doing so.

Dealing with depression is very difficult as we all know and there are far too many cases of people who suffer from this disorder but are either too ashamed to discuss their problems or are unwilling to seek help. The first step to getting the treatment you need is to admit that you are depressed and that it has affected all aspects of your life. Only then will you be able to get the right treatment that will give you the relief from your symptoms. Also, you will learn how to develop skills that will allow you to cope with life more effectively and to lead a happier and fuller life.

A depressed person will find that they are unable to function normally in most social situations. They may feel a lack of enjoyment in everything and this can lead to feelings of isolation and sadness. Dealing with depression is a serious matter and you must seek professional help if you are suffering from severe symptoms. If you have any feelings of shame about yourself or if you are suffering from low self-esteem, you will only be able to get on with your life if you receive treatment from qualified professionals. There is no reason why you should not speak to a medical professional today if you think that you or a loved one may be suffering from depression.

As discussed earlier, there is also the possibility that your depressed state may lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior. This is a very big issue and it should never be left untreated. If you suspect that you or someone close to you is thinking of suicide, it is extremely important to get help immediately. This is especially true if the thought came about as a result of feeling unwell or through what appears to be a major stressor. If you wait it could become an increasing problem and it is better to admit your fears and to seek treatment before they spiral out of control.

Dealing with depression is a process and it is unlikely that you will be able to treat it overnight. It may take time to work through the symptoms and to be able to identify the cause of them. If this is happening to you then you should make attempts to try and take time out for yourself every now and again, do not keep thinking about your problems. You might find that by focusing your mind on things such as gardening, writing or other relaxing activities you can actually reduce some of the symptoms and to take time out for yourself.
