Overcoming fear is a very difficult thing to do. There are various reasons why people become afraid, but the bottom line is that we all have fears. What you need to realise is that just because you are afraid of something does not mean it will come into your life. All it means is that you have learned to be scared of it. Here are some tips on overcoming fear:
o Think of an achievable goal – Just because you fear a certain situation or scenario, do not assume it is inevitable. You might be right in thinking that there is no way you will get through this but this does not mean that you should give up hope and get totally overwhelmed with anxiety. Instead of becoming anxious over the fear, focus on what can be done to overcome it. Think of the possible outcomes if you don’t get through this anxiety.
o Identify your fears – To help you discover the source of your anxiety, you must identify your fears. You can consult a therapist or psychologist for assistance. Alternatively, you can go online and do an online search for overcoming fear. You will find a lot of websites that provide advice for overcoming these fears. Read through them carefully and get to know what they involve.
o Take responsibility – If you make the decision that you are going to tackle your anxiety, then you must take responsibility. For example, you might tell yourself that you cannot do it alone and you will need the support of your family or friends. You must realise though that overcoming fear is possible, even if nobody else is around to help you. For example, if you have a fear of public speaking, you can conquer that by doing public speaking exercises. If you start doing these exercises on a regular basis, your confidence will build and before you know it, you will feel at ease when you are in the presence of others.
o Identify your fears – When you understand your fears, you will be able to pinpoint their source. Once you have identified the source of your fear, you will now be equipped to overcome it. For example, if you have a fear of speaking in public, you will first have to find out how often this actually happens to you. You can then plan how you are going to overcome this. On the other hand, if you have a fear of heights, you will have to find out the safest and highest places where you can speak out your mind.
o Look for alternative solutions – You can also work towards overcoming fear by looking for other solutions apart from the ones mentioned above. For example, if you do not like the way you look when you are on your knees, then you can wear a short-sleeved shirt under your dress. If you do not like looking like a man, you can work on your hair style. You can even find a whole bunch of reasons why you look different to others, use them as a stepping stone in overcoming fear. Remember, there are more things that you can do than just running away from your problems.
